Bang Tail

A special style of wallet envelope incorporating a perforated flap extending from the throat

Banker

Envelope style with the opening on the long edge and a diamond-shape flap

Blanket

Part of the litho process whereby the image is offset onto the blanket before printing

Burst

A means to guage the strength of paper, using either PSI or KPA (pounds per square inch or kilopascal) measurements

Flexography

A low-cost printing technique used on reel fed machines

Constanzia

A wallet style envelope with the side seams folded outside the back flap, particularly efficient for automatic enclosing

Glacine

A paper-based material used for windows, alternative plastic-based films are also available

Lithography

A high quality printing process

Opaque

A printed solid or other nondescript or specific design inside an envelope to provide added security which prevents the contents being read from the outside

Pocket

An envelope style with its opening along the short edge, not suitable for machine enclosing

Reel fed

A high speed manufacturing technique to convert envelopes from reels of paper

Throat

The gap between the scoreline and back flap of a wallet envelope. Another critical design element for many inserting machines

Wallet

An envelope style with its opening along the long edge often suitable for machine enclosing

Weight

Usually specified in grammes per square metre (gsm), it denotes the weight of the paper grade used in manufacture
